PROGRESS OF THE FINAL MATCH
Voroshilovgrad "Zorya" and Yerevan "Ararat" met for the first time in the finals in the history of the USSR cups. Prior to that, they met twice at various stages of this tournament: in 1939, Yerevan went further due to the absence of an opponent, in the 1/4 finals in 1973, following the results of two meetings, Ararat football players turned out to be stronger (2:0 at home and 0:1 away).
With the start of the match, the Zorya players seized the initiative. Sanasar Gevorgyan fouled in the 8th minute 20 meters to the right of Ararat's goal. Performing a free-kick, Zorya player Alexander Zhuravlev gave a short pass to Viktor Kuznetsov. He sent the ball into the net with a strong and accurate blow, opening the scoring in the match. But already after 6 minutes, the Yerevan team managed to recoup. Arkady Andriasyan took advantage of the inconsistency in the actions of the goalkeeper and the Zorya defenders. The ridiculous goal took away the confidence in the actions of the Zorya players, and Ararat gradually took over the advantage in the game. Twice after Gevorkyan's shots, the ball was knocked out from under the crossbar by the goalkeeper of Voroshilovgradtsev Alexander Tkachenko, but he did not even react to a jeweler's shot in the bottom corner in the 43rd minute of Eduard Markarov. Thus, just before the break, Ararat took the lead.
After the break, Zorya regained its former confidence in its actions and tried to besiege the gates of Ararat. Those, in turn, counted on counterattacks. However, in the second half, the spectators did not see any goals scored, and Ararat Yerevan became the owner of the USSR Football Cup for the second time in its history.
